Following another delay Gargoyles #3 was released on March 28, 2007. After an extended delay, Gargoyles #2 was released on December 13, 2006. Gargoyles #1 was released on Jand promptly sold out, ensuring a second printing. In June 2005, it was announced that a series of Disney-licensed, bi-monthly Gargoyles comic books would be created by Slave Labor Graphics in association with. The characters Beth Maza (who appeared in a photo in " Deadly Force") and Petros Xanatos appeared in the comics before their full debut on the show.Gargoyles is a bimonthly comic book produced by Slave Labor Graphics and Creature Comics and written by series creator Greg Weisman starting in 2006. Weisman still has his unpublished script for the comic, and would eventually use it as issue #6 of Gargoyles SLG comic. Weisman was eventually hired to write for the comic, but Marvel cut the deal with Disney before his run could be produced.

Greg Weisman, television series co-creator, did not have any direct involvement in the story development of the comic series, but was consulted on some plot points to be sure it stayed within certain boundaries. The Marvel series was tonally darker than the television series, dealing largely with Xanatos' experiments to create creatures and machines to defeat the Gargoyles. The books did not directly follow the continuity of the series, but they did reference specific events that took place within it. A 12th issue, to be entitled "The Day the Sun Kissed the Earth!!" was announced at the end of Issue 11, but never published. In 1995, Marvel Comics issued a Gargoyles comic book series which ran for 11 issues.
